FRESH SQUEEZED

Growing up in Florida, the smell of orange blossoms in the spring always makes me smile.  Somehow, the first sensory contact of the season always seems to catch me off guard then I find myself grinning from ear-to-ear.  Just driving down the road with the windows down, you can catch the light sweet fragrance of the orange blossoms coating the air.  Taking a long deep inhale is an involuntary reaction.  It’s pure joy.  The seasonal fresh-from-the-grove orange juice stores that open between November and May every year all over the state sell the best, and I mean the best, Florida orange juice in the world.  That first sip is indescribably delicious.

A truly delightful drink year round, Florida orange juice is healthy and refreshing!

TE QUIERO FIESTA GRANDE – Mount Dora, FL

Not sure if I my Spanish is correct but just in case, my intention in English is to say, I love you Fiesta Grande.  If you are ever in the Mount Dora area and hungry, check out my fave little Mexican restaurant!  Always consistently fabulous and quick, they have never disappointed me.  Their chimichanga and white cheese dip are the best!

About a year or so ago, my sister and I headed over to the Mount Dora Art Festival and decided to grab a bite to eat before walking around.  We hit up Fiesta Grande, I overate and needless to say, we didn’t make it to the festival.  We only skirted the back of the food vendor tables en route back to her car.  Once in, I was practically horizontal in the bucket seat.  It was too hard for me to sit in a regular position.  I have since recovered and learned my lesson however that hasn’t stopped me from patronizing this fabulous restaurant. Nice atmosphere and exactly what you would expect to see at a Mexican restaurant.  Indoor and outdoor dining options available and they have a bar too!

THE PROP SHOP – Tavares, FL

Known as America’s Seaplane City, Tavares, Florida, has been in the process of some exciting and progressive redevelopment.  Situated on the shores of Lake Dora, a prime spot for seaplanes and boats, the Prop Shop is a fabulously creative way to meet the functional needs of the area while preserving the memory of a beloved historic treasure.

The Prop Shop is a replica of possibly the oldest home in the area, the Woodlea house, which was unfortunately burnt down by arsonists several years ago.  I had the pleasure in the early 2000′s to actually see and tour the home before its unimaginable  fate.  Preserving a part of the city’s history and translating it in a  very creative way is especially noteworthy.  Props to the City of Tavares!

PALM ISLAND PARK – Mount Dora, FL

So what do you think of when you think of Mount Dora, FL?  Quaint downtown, the Mount Dora Arts Festival, antiques, shopping?  Well, I do too.  But there is another side of Mount Dora, the natural side that is a short walk just past the marina downtown. Palm Island Park is a snapshot of the old, jungly Florida and situated on Lake Dora.  At the entrance, there are picnic benches where visitors like to sit and look out on the water or bring their lunch.  Along the shoreline, the boardwalk hugs the water where you can get up close and personal with nature and wildlife.  In fact, within the first few minutes of my arrival, I was greeted by this beautiful heron perched on the railing and a few alligators swimming by.   You can continue along the boardwalk which extends for one third of a mile then take the footpaths to explore even more.  This is a great little park for both kids and adults to connect with nature.

With old cypress and palm trees, gorgeous birds and other wildlife, there is so much to beauty to see and experience in this lush semitropical habitat!  Don’t forget your camera and binoculars.  In a natural and dynamic environment like this, you are sure to see something interesting!

Admission is FREE and gates open everyday at dawn and close at dusk .

LAKE EUSTIS MUSEUM OF ART

Did you know that the Lake Eustis Museum of Art is the only museum in Lake County, Florida? I didn’t either until I popped in the other day to explore it.  This boutique sized museum serves an underserved area and is slated to keep growing!  Founded in 1995, their current and third location since inception is located in downtown Eustis,Florida,  across from the Eustis City Hall.

Headed up by Richard Colvin, I had the pleasure of sitting down and speaking to him about the museum.   Newly appointed, Mr. Colvin has an impressive background.  Hailing from Winter Park, Florida and a graduate in studio art from Rollins College, Winter Park, he went to work for the Cornell Fine Arts Museum at Rollins for 17 years as an exhibit coordinator.  He then moved in 1998 to the Maitland Art Center as curator and instructor until taking on a new position about a month ago with the Lake Eustis Museum of Art.

Prior to the arrival of Colvin, Susan Loden was the director.  “Susan Loden brought a lot of good artists here and got a lot of great publicity for the museum.  She deserves kudos for the job she did while she was here,” says Colvin.

The current exhibit is called Monumental Monochrome by Josh Garrick running through May 27, 2012.  On deck is Jim Wilson’s Eye-cons of Florida’s Wilderness set to run from June 1 – September 2, 2012.

In addition to the exhibits, the museum also holds children’s art programs.

For more information, please visit www.lakeeustismuseumofart.org or call 352.483.2900.  The museum is open Tues-Fri 10am-4pm and Sat/Sun 12noon-4pm.

For the budget conscience, admission to the museum is FREE (although donations are greatly appreciated!).  A trip to LEMA, lunch and a stroll around newly redeveloped downtown Eustis is a great way to support the local arts and enjoy an afternoon exploring one of Florida’s charming small towns!

I LOVE GIFT SHOPS

I love gift shops. I just do. My favorite are the kind in beachy destination spots.  It’s my kind of secret mission to find local art whenever I venture out to new and not-so-new locals.  But not just any art but art that moves me.  It’s like an authentic piece of that place that I get to take home and admire long after the trip has ended.  One of my favorite finds is this glass hermit crab that got my heart pounding when I first saw it.  I picked up this little gem in Captiva Island, Florida a few years ago.  It is a tangible, original piece crafted by a local artist that brings me back to that happy trip.  I love it now as much as I did when I bought it.  It’s the little things like this that bring me joy and inspire me to design products that offer that same joy to Florida visitors and locals alike.

What are some of your favorite finds while vacationing in the Sunshine State?
